Inscription reads "In loving remembrance of John Elson Carpenter. A local preacher of this circuit who nobly gave his life in France, March 23 1918, Age 32. From his wife".

The above clock is mentioned in the Calbourne Chapel Minute Book under the entry for the 24th February 1920: “It was agreed to accept with thanks the clock offered by Mrs John Carpenter in memory of her husband with heartfelt sympathy.”
